Bombardier Case Study
Bombardier transportation - getting safety back on track
Bombardier Transportation is the global leader in the rail equipment manufacturing and servicing industry. Its wide range of products includes passenger rail vehicles and total transit systems. The Central Rivers facility in the Midlands is responsible for the servicing of Cross County trains.
During 2004 local management team had identifi ed individual safety as significant issue - with frequency and severity of accidents rising throughout the year, Bombardier were subject to intense scrutiny.
JOMC were engaged in a significant programme that became active during summer 2005. Strategic input was followed by signifi cant training for senior managers, key Bombardier staff were trained to become lead trainers and JOMC behavioural interventions were initiated throughout the site organisation. A very forward thinking management team became fully committed to seeing the Behavioural Safety programmes embedded into Bombardier work practice and were quickly rewarded by a transformation in safety culture.
The hard data that had helped trigger the JOMC programme now helped establish its impact. The frequency and severity of accidents rapidly declined. This improvement has been sustained and continues to this day.
Bombardier Transportation are currently looking at extending the JOMC methodology to customer safety, process and product safety at the Central Rivers facility, and introducing the same programmes in partnership with JOMC throughout the UK.
