Morisson Case Study
Morrison construction - building a safer future
Morrison Construction was a UK based business that delivered building and infrastructure projects in both the public and private sectors, with an annual turnover of more than £330 million.
They had around 1800 Morrison's staff and engaged between 3 & 5000 subcontractors who also need to be managed as part of a company wide health and safety initiative.
The launch of the JOMC partnership programme saw a series of initiatives. These included management and leadership group workshops, the organisation of the workforce into teams that met once every two weeks, and specialist systems support. All team members were trained to conduct a JOMC behavioural intervention once a day, with all directors doing so once per week. This amounted to some 20,000 behavioural support interventions each year.
The results were quite remarkable. Reportable Injury Rate dropped from 0.58 to 0.22, accident incident rates fell by a dramatic 62% in 5 years (see graph).
So how did the culture change? In 1998 50% of the work force felt that "Doing the job" was usually seen as more important than Health and Safety by 2003 this number had fallen to 20%. Morrison Construction became the safest company in this sector, and the results clearly validated the JOMC methodology.
